Pub Food with Reviews, Maps and Links to their websites

The Wykeham Arms

75 Kingsgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9PE – 01962 853834

I took six other people here for dinner, and the food was very good, all round, we all had something different, and three courses. all the courses were good sizes, so you didn't feel hungry or stuffed, and not one comment that wasn't "great" I love the atmosphere of this historic pub, and the fires in the winter. the old school desks are an interesting touch, and on a summer evening, the back garden is a dream. would recommend this to anyone who cares about what they eat.

The Wykeham Arms is reliably excellent - great range of beers and wines, food is varied and plentiful and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We watched a number of the Six nations games there last year so no need to travel to Twickenham again!

The Royal Oak Pub

Royal Oak Passage, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9AU – 01962 842701

There are only a few pubs you can go in these days and get a great relaxed feeling. Food is great. The Ale's are tops and varied. Staff, well they are apart of the pub, always welcoming and smiling. Giving out a warm pleasant service. All in all, a warm atmosphere.

Really nice old pub. Good ales on tap, excellent food and service. Welcoming to families with young children, highchairs available.

King Alfred

11 Saxon Road, Hyde, Winchester Hampshire SO23 7DJ – 01962 854370

Went there for a quiz. Great service from friendly staff and good, reasonably priced food. I highly recommend.

Great service, great food, great room. Stayed for two nights and was very impressed - will definitely come back! Can't recommend enough!

All Restaurants

Ask Italian Restaurant

God Begot House, 101 High Street, Winchester SO23 9AH – 01962 849464

Generally Ask chain of restaurants are good-very good service wise, but this time it was unbelievably unprofessional! Aside from the supervisory manager seating us and being lovely, the 'delivery' staff were rude, impatient and sarcastic! There were 7 of us booked at a table with an over sized sieve of pumpkins which were impractical when the large pizza boards came out. The 'server' was impatient with us moving everything around, and finding space for the sieve of pumpkins without an offer to help. None of us ordered wine, yet the wine glasses were left on the table to clutter it up, and we were expected to move them to make room. Note: the restaurant was hardly busy. Each time a place or drink was delivered it was with a 'sorry!' impatient/rude tone, and by a grumpy looking waitress/waiter. Dessert time, delivered WITHOUT cutlery.....so when a member of our party asked politely the bar staff for some the simple was retorted with a 'yeah in a minute' sarcastic tone. Quite unbelievable that I even wasted my time booking there when two other Italian restaurants were probably better. The supervisory manager did apologize profusely, and was the only professional. It will be a very long time I decide to dine at Ask in Winchester, or recommend it

Good chow, good service, never let down. Bravo.

The Old Vine

8 Great Minster Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9HA – 01962 854616

The Old Vine is a small hotel-pub in Winchester, just in front of the Cathedral. It's a very charming place!! We loved to stay there!! Everything is perfect!! The rooms are very, very, confortable, lovely decoration, perfect service, and they have wonderful food!!

A great place to visit in Winchester! I am an American who lived in the beautiful city of Winchester for two years and absolutely fell in love with The Old Vine while I was there. They have a great selection of wines and ales and a menu that is constantly changing. The attention to detail by the proprietors and staff is evident with each and every visit. Not sure if they are still serving these dishes, but you MUST try the lamb shank for dinner and the banoffee pie for dessert. Everything is locally sourced and the menu changes seasonally. Also, they are located just across from the Winchester Cathedral. My two cents, if you are in England around Christmas time you absolutely MUST go to Winchester for the Christmas market and if you are lucky...grab a table, even better yet, rent a room and grab a table at The Old Vine!

The Black Rat Restaurant

88 Chesil Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 0HX – 01962 844465

We have been dining at the Black Rat since it opened but our recent visit was disappointing, the dishes where over complicated to the detriment of the ingredients. Servings were consistently chopped into small pieces with dressings that submerged the quality of the individual components. The bill was more expensive and we went home hungry as well. Felt like a restaurant trying too hard to get 2 stars. Will probably eat in the New Forest next time (The Pig, Lime Wood or Montagu Arms).

Just had a wonderful evening. The food not only looked like art but had so many innovative combinations of flavours and depth. Even the bread was an experience. Drank a fantastic bottle of Rioja and mentioned that I was a fan of gin and brought a complimentary gin and Padrino tonic. The Black Rat is the only place outside of london serving alcoholic tonic water! Barry, who looked after us is an absolute legend and was as much a part of the pleasure of the evening as the food and ambience. We ate inside which is cosy and classic but had dessert outside in a little tiki style hut that was luxurious, heated and smoker friendly. Everyone there seems to take real pride in what they do and if I could I'd be there every day guzzling samples from their wide range of gins. It isn't cheap, nor should it be. An absolute pleasure. Thank you.

Chinese Restaurants

Dim T Restaurant

8-9 Jewry Street, Winchester SO23 8RZ – 01962 843000

Friendly up beat restaurant offering pan Asia food......dim sum was excellent and served quickly and piping hot...loved the shared platter for starters. ....good value tasty food ..recommend you try this on way to station after a hard day shopping in Winchester

Great place to go for Dim Sum and other oriental dishes. Food quality is excellent, service and ambiance is great. Will be visiting again!

Mr So

3 Jewry Street, Winchester SO23 8RZ – 01962 861234

Our Chinese friends like to eat in here

I go here often for lunch on business, and also (less frequently) in the evening with friends and family. The service is always excellent, if occasionally surly. The food is undoubtedly my favourite chinese cusine, and the two-course lunch menu for £5 (which has quite a lot of choice) is simply excellent. In the evenings, however, it can be an expensive place, but the quality is worth it. I have never known anyone say anything bad about the food here. Mr So's restaurant wouldn't have been around for as long as it has if it wasn't doing something right! Reccommend: Starter: Spare ribs are good quality ribs with truly excellent sauce. I sometimes go here just for the ribs. Main course: Beef in black bean sauce is just great and better than anywhere else I have had it. There are tonnes of great dishes, but this one is a consistant favourite :-)

Indian Restaurants and takeaways

The Bengal Sage

72-74 Saint George's Street, Winchester SO23 8AH – 01962 862173

Tried the goat. Very nice. Not your normal run of the mill curry house. Some unique and Interesting dishes on offer.

The food here was delicious and not typical of Indian restaurants you normally come across. A lot of the dishes I hadn't really heard of before and they also had goat, water buffalo and some interesting sounding fish on the menu. The price of the food isn't particularly cheap though with it costing about £15 for a main course with rice. I thought the portions were slightly on the small side for me and the naan was conveniently cut up into quarters, but it was quite a small portion compared to what I'm used to. I ordered the Water Buffalo Bhoona, which was deliciously flavoursome and the buffalo was perfectly soft and melt in the mouth. I would definitely recommend it if you don't have a huge appetite and are willing to spend a bit more than average. They also have takeaway available.

Gandhi Indian Restaurant

163 - 164 High Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9BA – 01962 863940

Loved the food especially the lamb and prawn dishes. Tasty hot and looked very attractive. Rice portion and spinach portion a little small but tasty and loved the white crockery. Busy restaurant but quickly served. Well worth a try

I used to go to the Gandhi all the time when I was younger, and it hasn't seemed to change a bit. The atmosphere and decor is nice and intimate, I love getting a booth along the sides. The staff are polite and helpful, and the food is good. I love getting takeaways from here. The prices are good too.

Rimjhim Indian Restaurant

1-3 City Road, Winchester SO23 8SD – 01962 868352

this is jony from winchester, today 12 January i went to Rimjhim for eating some food, i ordered some starter , main course, starter was good , main course was really rubbish, i ordered butter chicken , T dall, k naan , rice for the main course, i got lots of sugar in Butter chicken, lots of salt in T Dall, by the way , that's not the fact , what i got from there waiter behavior,i m astonished and hurt, one of their waiter asked me, where are u from? i didn't want to tell him, but he asked me again, i just said india ,dellhi ,which is not real, he asked me which part are u from? , i just said its personal , i don't wanna say, he asked me again why u are not telling , i was very angry for his questioning.........that's why i complained to the owner of Rimjhim , don't engage this type of waiter ...... ,

My parents have been to the other Rim Jhim nearby for years and visit the one in Winchester quite often. The food is great and not greasy like some curries. I love the naan. The chef has been there for 5 years so we've always been happy with the quality of the dishes. All the food had great reviews from around our table, but my issue was that this time the main course took forever to come and it wasn't that busy. However, I've never had this problem before. That won't stop us visiting again, we love this place.

Prezzo

16 Jewry Street, Winchester SO23 8RZ – 01962 864256

This review is not for Winchester.. I've not yet had chance to enjoy.. My review is in general. Yeovil.. Never to return after our meal was so rudely hurried due to table needed for next diners. Blandford.. Chicken was kept so long under heat lamps that the edges were too dry to eat & the profiterols also were not the usual standard. Nottingham ...Fabulous Ringwood " Port Solent " Wimborne "

It was a great time we spend there. Food was very tasty and portions big enough to fill even a monster :) service top 5stars. Definitely worth comming back.

Zizzi's

57 High Street, Winchester SO23 9BX – 01962 841814

Extremely good value for the huge 'rustica' pizzas which, if you don't order a boring one, are slathered with delicious toppings. The Piccanté is particularly good. Since that is what they are known for it would be unwise to order anything else and expect it to be as good as them. Well, some of the starters are really top bunny as well. The calamari rings are always perfectly cooked with a wonderful texture and they taste fabby-mongous. They also do some risotto rice balls filled with cheese that are lovely. Easily the best pizzas in Winchester - my view of this chain has improved in leaps and bounds since going to this branch regularly. Order your starters carefully, get a rustica pizza, and you would have to be a pretty dreary type if you didn't have a great time here.

Great food & service, a little pricey for pizza but worth it.

Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel

Paternoster Row, Winchester SO23 9LQ – 01962 312800

Although circumstances forced cancellation of my stay at the Mercure Winchester, I would like to comment on their outstanding customer service levels. In particular Lucy Demuth, sales and events manager, pulled out the stops to ensure I had a reservation for New Year's eve dinner, only minutes before the chef's deadline. Then sadly a family emergency forced me to cancel the hotel booking and meal the next day - New Year's eve! Despite the very late notice, Lucy explained the situation to her manager and subsequently allowed the cancellation without penalty. So I apologise again to Lucy for the double workload, and thank her and the Mercure management for their kindness. Looking forward to staying there before too long!

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit... today, not only the excellent food, but for the marvelous service that I personally received, from the bar waitress that was on duty today, her name is Jessica... she is not only an asset to your hotel, but she would be a great instructor for new staff coming into the industry ...

Wine Bars and Cocktail Bars

Tried it out to see what it was like - mmm

No. 5 Bridge Street

5 Bridge Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 0HN – 01962 863838

Food was ok but not the biggest portions. £170 for a table for four which included starter, main course and dessert, we didnt have coffees as no one came to serve us. Three times we had to their visit the bar, twice for drinks and once to request the bill.

Good food, good drinks, lovely venue.
